The current situation: No protection for babies during an emergency
Inadequate rescue options
Imagine that a hospital is on fire. The smoke generated by the fire can quickly become life-threatening. Adults become unconscious after taking five to seven breaths. Another two or three breaths and they die. For this reason medical personnel are given training on what to do in an emergency. Breathing apparatus and smoke hoods can be used to protect adults and children from the effects of smoke. But what about babies? Ironically, no protective equipment is available for the youngest and most defenceless of us in the event of a fire. Despite the fact that two or three breaths in a smoke-filled atmosphere are fatal for babies. Current rescue methods – for example transport in incubators which can weigh up to 160kg; carrying babies under firefighters’ jackets or unprotected evacuation via a turntable ladder – are all life-threatening for babies.
Every second counts
It is not only the smoke which is dangerous. Babies also react extremely sensitively to temperature fluctuations. When temperatures deviate by more than 4 degrees from the usual 23 degrees Celsius this can cause cardiovascular problems and, in extreme case, death. Fires and temperature fluctuations are not the only dangers which babies face. They are also helpless if there is a gas leak, flooding, a pandemic or other comparable emergency situations. In every one of these cases every second counts, particularly when it comes to evacuating babies. So it is all the more important that medical professionals and rescue services have the required equipment and training. And this is exactly where we can help.
